A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's flagship government projects.
The crash took place on the Interoceanic Train, a route built to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was created to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” declared the national leader.
The official announced that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those involved.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose term finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his government's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

In the aftermath of the disaster, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an urgent halt in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was suggested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In reaction, the president maintained that the train had been operating in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these strategic undertakings.
