Balloons carrying numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for hours when multiple of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting 6,000 passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons carrying 18,000 packs of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Cross-Border Contraband Trend
While creating issues, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are not unusual in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were documented the previous year.
Cross-Border Effects
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are rudimentary tools used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Officials added that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible amounts of illegal goods and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
Regional Security Context
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
